Pakistan is a country which was carved out of the Indian sub continent in 1947, with the Muslim population assuming that they would have a better life in a mono culture society. The most fertile areas on the Northern Indian plains and the East Indian state of Bengal were demarcated as Islamic countries. However political strife within the two Pakistan’s lead to the formation of Bangladesh in 1971 after a 14 day war with India in 1971. West Pakistan was left to fend for itself as the only surviving country. Trouble in the region and the Cold War between the USSR and USA in the during major part of the twentieth century allowed military regimes to flourish in Pakistan with the blessings of USA which wanted to sustain a military presence close to the border of Afghanistan, which shared borders with the erstwhile USSR. Successive military regimes thoroughly suppressed the Pakistani people and democracy just showed short glimpses during the existence of the country.
After the disintegration of USSR, terrorism prevailed in the region with many international plots being hatched within Pakistan, the country continuing to suffer until now. However, the country has its share of intellectuals’ and public seeking progress and economic prosperity, and the IT revolution has made some dent into Pakistan as well. Although the local currency is at its lowest value due to worldwide recession in loss of aid from the United States, the country strives to survive in the big bad world. It infrastructure has been established and broadband has allowed its public to share the international arena. Pakistani intellectuals and businessmen settled in the United States and Europe have played an important role in sustaining the image of the country as a nation.
